J.P. Harrington Collection (1942)

Description

J.P. Harrington traveled across the US gathering linguistic material from a wide range of Native communities. His work at Siletz included interviews with several people in 1942. Additionally, Harrington commissioned John Marr to conduct audio recordings of speakers at Siletz, which are also available through ILDA (see John Marr Recordings at the National Anthropological Archives (NAA)). Six reels of Harrington’s microfilm include linguistic material on Southern Oregon Dene (Athabaskan): reels 8, 19, 25, 26, 27, and 28. The content of these reels is extremely diverse, and includes ethnographic and historical information in addition to linguistic material. Some portions of these materials are sensitive, and we have elected to redact images of pages that contain information that is sensitive in nature. These documents are cataloged by reel, and can be accessed through the Smithsonian Institute’s online search catalog SIRIS, available here: http://anthropology.si.edu/naa/search.html.
