Archaeological studies in central and south-central Indiana revealed that maygrass (Phalaris caroliniana) was either cultivated or "strongly encouraged in wild stands" by indigenous people's during the late Woodland period (seen in archaeological sites prior dated from before 700 A.D., then again in sites dating from A.D. 1000 to A.D. 1450).
