Place Identification Numbers

Reserves and allotments acquired by Miamis in treaties are grouped into several types, and their identification numbers correspond to those types. Other places--generally expansive territories--do not include letter prefixes.

  • R001 and following are “reserves” acquired by Miami communities and individuals in Indiana and Ohio, 1818-1840. Their specific legal statuses are marked.
  • KS001 and following are allotments or reserves acquired by Miami individuals through three rounds of privatization in Kansas. Their specific legal statuses are marked.
  • OK001 and following are allotments or reserves acquired by Mami individuals through three rounds of privatization in Oklahoma. Their specific legal statuses are marked.
  • Place 1 is the Heritage homeland centering in the Wabash River Valley.
  • Place 2 is the Kansas homeland.
  • Place 3 is the Oklahoma homeland.
  • Places 300-399 are territories ceded by the Miamis to the U.S. via treaties.
